History
Pinar Elementary School opened on the Michael McCoy Elementary School site for the 1972-73 school year. In August, 1976, Pinar moved to its present fifteen acre site at 3701 Anthony Lane. Originally, the building was "open concept" in design; however, during the 00-01 school year, the building was renovated to create individual classrooms. The main building now consists of twenty-two classrooms as well as resource and multi-purpose spaces. Sixteen additional classrooms were constructed in the fall of 2001 and are located in two buildings, joined by a breezeway, to the north side of the main building. No classes are housed in portable classrooms at this time.
Pinar Elementary is a Title I school which serves children from several cultural, social and economic backgrounds in grades Pre-kindergarten through Five. The current ethnic distribution is 72% Hispanic, 16% White, 7% Black, and 5% Other.
In addition to the basic elementary curriculum received in the regular classroom, all students are provided Art, Physical Education, Music, Media and Guidance instruction. Pinar Elementary provides ESOL services and support for all qualifying students. The following exceptional education programs are provided at Pinar: Full-time and Resource SLD (Specific Learning Disabilities), EMH (Educable Mentally Handicapped), Speech and Language as well as Emotionally Behaviorally Disabled (EBD).
The staff consists of classroom, support, exceptional education, special area and resource teachers. Instructional support personnel include a variety of paraprofessionals, clerical and custodial personnel, as well as a Behavior Specialist and a Principal. It takes quite a crew to efficiently handle the daily operation of the school.
Recognizing the diverse student population served at Pinar Elementary, the staff strives to provide a variety of academic, cultural and social experiences for each child. A strong extended day program is available to assist parents with before and after school supervision. The school is supported by a PTA, a School Advisory Council as well as an active and award winning volunteer program. Approximately 76% of the students receive free or reduced lunch.
